**Exciting.Explosive.. in the pocket are just a few ways
to define this lady drummer!!
Denise Johnson started playing drums in her junior
year of high school, with the church as her strongest
aspiration. Denise began performing with the gospel
choir of Mount Vernon, NY. Denise also played for the
the Mt .Vernon High School Broadway productions.
Although Denise never had formal drum lessons, she
was well on her way to success.
Denise soon moved to Virginia where she continued to
play for various churches. She was asked to sit in form
many local groups. Denise continued to perfect her gift
over the years.
Well-known gospel artists such as The Steele Family,
The Singing Angels, Percy Johnson and Eternal Life
became a part of her repertoire. As her reputation grew
she was asked to participate in many studio recordings.
In 1993, Denise was inspired to start her own all
female gospel band. The band consisting of drums,
percussions, keyboards, bass guitar, saxophone,
rapper, background and lead vocals who would later
become known as Rejuvenation.
The band performed at prisons, recreation centers,
shelters, and many churches. They also performed
with well known gospel artists such as Darryl Coley,
Helen Baylor, Angelo and Veronica, Tyrone Powell and
the Friends of Christ, and many other local groups.
In October 2000, Denise was invited to sit in with the
all girl band called Syxx, formerly known as 4YP.
Denise was introduced to different styles of music, and
shortly thereafter became the groups drummer. Within
the 2 year contract the band performed for Stevie
Wonder, played with many local groups, and appeared
on the Michel Wright Show known as 8101.
Denise has played for various Youth chiors and
churches. She was fortunate to play for Iyanla
Vanzant's Graduation ceremony for 2 yearts with other
talented gospel musicians. She was blessed to work
for Nintendo in promoting their music program called
WiiMusic. She performed the interactive drums as well
as from the library of 100 instruments. Denise has
played for the legendary group, The Intruders. She has
played for various local artists such as Allie, The
Briscoe Brothers, Cornell Stone, The Francis Coates
Project, and local bands as needed. She is currently
the drummer for the all girl band, LadyRhythm.
She also plays for Aleksis
(www.myspace.com/aleksisbilmanis), Franky the
Genius, and local jazz trios.
Denise hopes to inspire other female musicians to use
the gift that God has placed within them to the best of
their ability. She also hopes to inspire and give back to
the youth by teaching drums in the near future.
