James Y. Tillerson
CAMPS SPRINGS, MD-- James Y. Tillerson, 70, of Camp Springs, MD, passed away
Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at Southern Maryland Hospital. Born August 26, 1939 in
Spartanburg County (Little Africa Community), he was the son of the late Ushray W.
and Thelma Burgess Tillerson.

He was the beloved husband of Gertie Cook Tillerson. He graduated with a B.S.
Degree from Claflin University, Orangeburg, SC and a Masters Degree from American
University of Washington, D.C. He was a member of New Macedonia Baptist Church,
Washington, D.C.; a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity; retired as educator
and Head Football Cash of the Theodore Roosevelt High School "Rough Riders" of
Washington, D.C. after many successful coaching seasons that resulted in numerous
City and District Championship teams. The Theodore Roosevelt High School Football
Stadium was renamed the James Y. Tillerson Stadium in his honor October 2008.




Other survivors include two sons, Dwayne and Denard Tillerson of Camp Springs, MD;
three brothers, the Reverend Elbert S. Tillerson (Mildred) of Inman, SC, the Reverend
Thomas M. Tillerson (Aldrena) of Farmville, VA, Kenneth D. Tillerson (Cathy) of
Spartanburg, SC; one brother, Alvin R. Tillerson, preceded him in death; one sister,
Sallie Ruth T. Blackley, preceded him in death; nine sisters, Eloise T. Miller, Jo T.
McDowell, Brenda T. Williams (Truman), all of Spartanburg, Tillie (Lorenza) Stanford of
Tega Cay, SC, Shelvia T. (Dr. Richard L.) Sadler of Roebuck, SC, Ann T. (Flavours)
McMillian of Campobello, SC, Linda T. (Lucius) Buckman of Greer, SC, Bena T.
(Converse) Waddell and Dorothy T. Sims of Inman, SC; six grandchildren; one uncle,
Nathaniel Burgess of Spartanburg, SC; and a host of nephews, nieces, and friends.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 1, 2010 at New Macedonia
Baptist Church, 4115 Alabama Avenue SE, Washington, D.C. 20019.
